You’ve planned an action packed outdoor vacation in the White Mountains but the weather isn’t cooperating? A rainy day doesn’t have to be a downer on your vacation! There is plenty still to explore and experience. Just pack your rain gear and good shoes and head out to experience some of these beautiful White Mountain adventures that are not at all diminished by bad weather.
Explore NH’s Unique Geology:
Flume Gorge – The Flume Gorge is part of Franconia Notch State Park and is a stunning natural attraction. Visitors walk through the Gorge on a series of walkways and stairs pinned precariously to the slick granite walls. You follow the river through the gorge while the walls rise up to 90 feet above you. A must-see in any weather!
Lost River Gorge and Boulder Caves – The Lost River Gorge is located in Lincoln, NH. A 3/4 mile boardwalk takes you down into the gorge and through a series of caves formed in the last Ice Age. Most of the caves are easily accessible though some have ladders and a few have areas where you have to crawl through on your hands and knees. You can opt out of any of these caves and just walk on the boardwalk so this is great for the whole family (including Grandma!).
Polar Caves – Another great example of the great power of the Ice Age, Polar Caves is located in Rumney, NH and offers a trail through 9 caves. It is located on a hillside and there are many stairs connecting the various caves. Again you can bypass the difficult ones if needed.
Have an Outdoor Adventure:
Alpine Adventures Zipline – This Zipline park at Loon Mountain offers several different zipline tours for beginner to experienced zipliners. Beautiful mountain scenery abounds and every tour includes a fun off-road ride to get to the top of the course.
Raft the Adroscoggin – The Adroscoggin River offers rafting adventures for everyone. There are Class II/III/IV rapids available and you’ll be getting wet anyway! Take a trip with North Woods Rafting in Milan NH for a great experience.
Visit a local farm:
Sherman Farm – Another wonderful local farm in East Conway, NH. Sherman has fresh veggies, meats and dairy as well as offering a “Little Farmers” program and a “Paint and Taste” night. They also offer a fun Haunted Corn Maze in the fall.
Learn about Local History:
Remick Country Doctor Museum and Farm -The Remick farm in Tamworth, NH was settled almost 200 years ago. Dr. Edwin Remick and Dr. Edwin Crafts Remick provided 99 years of continuous medical care to Tamworth and surrounding towns. The museum aims to educate the public on how people “farmed, worked and played in this historic landscape”.
New England Ski Museum – located at Franconia Notch State Park the museum explores the history of skiing from its early development to today. Also highlights several local ski heroes.
American Police Motorcycle Museum – A unique collection of 80 motorcycles from the last 100 years. Located in Meredith, NH.
Gorham Historical Society and Railroad Museum – Located in the former Gorham railroad station the museum contains exhibits on railroads, White Mountain history, forestry and more. Railroad equipment on display includes a 1911 Baldwin 0-6-0 steam locomotive, a 1949 F-7 B&M diesel locomotive, two 1929 boxcars, a 1951 Russell snow plow, a 1924 boxcar and a 1942 caboose.
Entertain the kids:
Squam Lakes Science Center – a fantastic Science center in Holderness, NH. Many animal displays and trails detailing local environments, flora and fauna. Partly outdoors. Boat Tours on Squam Lake also available.
Kahuna Laguna – an indoor water park in North Conway, NH. Water slides, hot tubs, kiddie pools and more.
North Conway Children’s Museum – An imaginative play space designed for kids 7 and under.
Jump into the Local Art Scene:
The Gallery at WREN (Women’s Rural Entrepreneurial Network) – The Gallery provides a space for professional local artists to display and sell their fine art. A new show is presented each month.
Museum of White Mountain Art – Located in downtown Jackson, NH in the beautifully renovated Town Hall building the Museum of White Mountain Art contains works by White Mountain School artists from the 19th century.
Jackson Art Studio and Gallery – The Studio and Gallery features works by local artists. Artist demonstrations take place each weekend and the Studio offers a variety of classes. (Open weekends only)
Shop til you Drop:
Ravenwood Curio Shop – Located in Jackson, NH this shop is a great way to spend a rainy afternoon. It is full of local specialties, unique items, handcrafted gifts, pottery, glass, antiques and art. Closed Tues/Wed.
Handcrafter’s Barn – Located in North Conway the Handcrafter’s Barn contains items by over 150 juried artisans. Unique items from New England (and beyond) crafters make great gifts!
Marketplace at 101 – Located in Gorham, NH, the Marketplace at 101 offers a funky collection of Antiques and Vintage items. Also local produce and craft items.
Local Works Marketplace @ WREN – Two locations selling beautiful local crafts and unique gift items. All artists are members of WREN (Women’s Rural Entrepreneurial Network).
Chutter’s Candy – Chutter’s is a HUGE old fashioned candy store in Littleton, NH.
Zeb’s General Store – Zeb’s is an traditional General Store filled with local goodies, an old-fashioned candy counter, whimsical trinkets, antiques and a little bit of everything else. Located in North Conway.
